Olive Class

St Francis of Assisi Primary School’s SEN Unit is a specialised classroom for children with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder and speech, language and communication difficulties; it is for Key Stage 2 children aged 7 – 11.

Pupils who attend school at the SEN Unit will have an Educational Health Care Plan and will have been assessed by their local council prior to their start date.

We provide a calm, stimulating environment where every child gets the opportunity to learn, develop and establish relationships with peers and staff. Where appropriate, children integrate into the mainstream classes to learn with their age group.

Curriculum

The curriculum is individualised depending on each child’s needs. Following both the National Curriculum and individual Educational Health Care Plans, we tailor teaching to ensure that we give children all the tools they need to learn. We promote life skills and practise these throughout the school day. Regular Sensory Diet sessions, along with sensory breaks are incorporated into the timetable.

Transition

Prior to starting at our SEN Unit, we will complete an observation in the pupil’s current setting and communicate with everyone involved in the child’s life to get a greater understanding of their needs. Parents/Guardians will have the opportunity to visit the classroom.

Part of a Team

We work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in order to ensure children’s optimum development and consult professionals when necessary. These professionals include; Speech and Language therapists, Counsellors, Occupational Therapists and many more.
