Art and Design

For the child, the value of an art and design experience is precious and stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and is a special way of understanding and responding to the world. Children are able to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

For a young child, art is primarily a means of expression. At St. Francis of Assisi, we aim to provide the skills with which to express ideas, images and feelings and enable children to respond emotionally and intellectually to sensory experiences.

We aim to give children the opportunity to experiment with different media, to develop an aesthetic awareness and enable them to make informed judgements about their own art and that of artists, designers and architects from other periods, styles and cultures.

We follow a creative curriculum and Art and Design is incorporated into the teaching of other subjects, such as History, Geography and R.E. All children from year one onwards use a sketch book, to be used for samples of techniques, colour mixing and artist research. These are used for class or individual work and reflect each individual's personal journey.
