Design Technology

At St Francis of Assisi, we aim to assist pupils in achieving Design Technology attainment targets set out in the national curriculum. By the end of each key stage, children will be expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the national curriculum. Pupils will learn a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as maths, science, computing and art.

Children will design, make and evaluate purposeful, functional and appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria. They will use a range of tools, equipment and materials to perform practical tasks, build structures and explore mechanisms.

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed. They should work in a range of relevant contexts, e.g. home, school, leisure and the wider environment.

As part of their work with food, pupils will be taught to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Learning how to cook is a cruical life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others well, now and in later life.
